Doctor Who Series 6 “The God Complex” - Review

Doctor Who Series 6 Episode 11 “The God Complex”

Cast: Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill, Caitlin Blackwood and David Williams

Review - SPOILER ALERT!
Let me put one thing out in the open, Doctor Who is brilliant ahahaha this episode was a fantastic for a number of good reasons… It’s scary story like “Night Terrors” it worked very well with the hotel having huge corridors and identical rooms a smart idea, which writers have been using for a long time “The Shining” is perfect example. The script is extremely witty, particularly when it comes to David Walliams’s cowardly moleman character, a lot like Peter Kay’s Abzorbaloff lol I liked how the Doctor within the first 5 mins was impress by Rita’s intelligent on what was going on? Favourite line “Amy your fired”  “What?” “Just joking ahaha” (The Doctor: Phone Me) ahaha I found very funny in how she could of been a possible companion, one I did notice throughout the episode was the framed photos on the wall that had a Sontaran, Judoon and Tritovore all aliens from past series.

The fear factor was very good in picking the right monsters for the theme of story, e.g. The Weeping Angels with strange angles and sequences making things feel like something experienced in a dream state, and having the creepy dumbs that laugh and directly looking at you was done well by the director (and the filming crew) one of the bad things about the story is hard to keep track, sometimes it didn’t make sense lol apart from the scene where the hotel illusion rolled back and the monster died, I’m guess the monster is just needs to eat on people’s faiths to live but if that’s true he got no choice and the monster is more of a victim, this is why I like Doctor Who is not stereotypical monsters wanting to take over the world…it’s an alien who does what he needs to do of course killing people is wrong but as a viewer I do feel sorry for this character.

One of the best scenes was Matt Smith’s The Doctor looking into room 11 (nice reference being he’s the 11th Doctor lol) and not showing he’s greatest fear, my money is on the Doctor seeing himself in that room like Series 5 “Amy's Choice” plus we never saw Amy’s fear also, so I’m interested to see whether they make it known later date. The cast put in impressive performances, most notably Matt Smith, who was tremendous in the scene where he makes Amy lose her faith in him and of course later on The Doctor bids farewell to the Ponds and decide to take them home, I found it to be smart writing because of past companies, one being trapped on a parallel universe, one losing her memories of being with the time lord and others which had ended in a bad note….The Doctor as learned from past mistakes and no is moving on, I would think the Ponds will be back for the season finale, right?

Overall I found it to be an interesting episode with a strong ending and is definitely one to remember.

Doctor Who Series 6 “The Girl Who Waited” - Review

Doctor Who Series 6 Episode 10 “The Girl Who Waited”

Cast: Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill

Review - SPOILER ALERT!
Now this a definitely budget episode for the series ahaha and I’m not surprise from all the regenerations, new monsters and the big to America but that does mean it’s bad episode, it’s actually very refreshing to have a solid story with Amy being held in a quarantine place and the good Doctor and Rory trying to found a way to free her, what makes this great episode is the fact their only the main three character and with a big problem….it’s like in series 4 “Midnight” just a nice solo or group preference goes along with a series, especially Doctor Who fortunately Tom McRae delivered a story that transcended such potential limitations, and delivered quite a powerful and moving drama, with an ending that although inevitable still delivered a well of sadness.
The opening reminds of an old story of Doctor Who “Mind Robber” with the 2nd Doctor played Patrick Troughton as its plenty of bare white sets, dressing and white robots lol but the story of this episode wouldn’t of been good drama (or interesting in fact) with the very sensational performance by Karen Gillan, who excelled as an embittered older version of Amy stranded in quarantine and forced to be in hiding for far, far longer than she’d had to wait for the Doctor before. So I feal Karen really is a strong actress and can play a good drama piece, which looking back on past actress like Bille Piper & Catherine Tate brings out their A Game.
Overall the performance by Karen, Matt and Arthur was on the money and given the audience a low-key type story with the relationship of Amy & Roy, so I feel it was great episode.

Torchwood: Miracle Day “The Bloodline” - Review

Torchwood: Miracle Day (Series 4) Episode 10 “The Bloodline” The series finale.

Cast: John Barrowman (Doctor Who), Eve Myles (Doctor Who & Merlin) Mekhi Phifer (ER), Alexa Havins (All My Children) and Bill Pullman (Independence Day & The Grudge)

Review - SPOILER ALERT!
Well the ending is here after 10 weeks of watching this new America version of Torchwood, with the team travels across the world on a desperate mission to stop the three families and to find out the origins of “The Blessing” but the clock is ticking. Now my original thoughts of the ending was everyone saves the day, the bad guys are gone and Torchwood team is back in business….thankfully I was wrong in a big way, which is great when you’re watching a series like this because don’t want to guess right the ending, I always like a twist within TV, Film and Games so it’s satisfying enough after ten episodes of suspense, myself and the audience finally get some answers lol you have to admit they didn’t shy away from nailing it down. By creating the Miracle, the Families are proposing to take control of the world – who lives, who dies, how long, etc. It’s the ultimate allegorical expression of the very fears and tensions our world has undergone for as long as some control the rest. With the recent financial collapse and widening gap between haves and have-nots, it’s hard to see this as fantasy the best thing about Torchwood it’s telling stories in a realistic way and this painful reality of what can be…it’s pretty scary to think.

So the question throughout the series is it Aliens again like the 456 in “Children of Earth” and the answer is NO! It’s very anti-Alien and I like the different this time to past series….it’s more about people trying work around the fact their immortal and showing Captain Jack  with a new danger of being human again but of course we all knew he get he’s power back, with him and Rex  sacrificing them self’s with their blood into core of the earth  (because the Jack’s blood is special) the world goes back to normal with “Death” being back, so I feel this episode is the strongest of “Miracle Day” with each character having a moment to shine even Oswald Danes played by Bill Pullman had a great ending, sadly some characters was killed off but that shows the realistic side of Torchwood, so it was a good card to play…ahaha I wasn’t expecting the huge shock moment with Rex being immortal  like Captain Jack, very interesting twist by Russell T Davies  lol.

Overall we get solid wrap-up and an incredible final stunner (or two) that sets up a potential fifth series.

Fright Night (Remake) - Review

Release Year: 2011
Country: USA
Cert (UK): 15
Running Time: 106 mins

Director: Craig Gillespie

Cast: Colin Farrell (Horrible Bosses), Anton Yelchin (Star Trek, Terminator: Salvation), David Tennant (Doctor Who) and Imogen Poots (28 Weeks Later)

Review -SPOILER ALERT!
Brief storyline of the film, teenager Charley Brewster (Yelchin) guesses that his new neighbour Jerry Dandrige (Farrell) is a vampire responsible for a string of recent deaths. When no one he knows believes him, he enlists Peter Vincent (Tennant), a self-proclaimed vampire killer and Las Vegas magician, to help him take down Jerry.

Okay I am very happy to say that is excellent remake the actors all did a great job in their respective parts, I think Colin Farrell was a perfect choice to play the bad guy, and he is bad, He hardly even tries to hide it in the movie. However, for my money, David Tennant stole the show in a role that I wish was larger it took a longer time for he’s character Peter Vincent to actually appear but when he did was a treat but didn't need to be to serve the purpose of the film. He did a wonderful job not playing The Doctor so many of us have come to know and love him for, and yet he was just as enjoyable as a magician with a drinking problem. The only weak actor was Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Superbad) it's not eve his fault. He just did such a unique job playing "Mclovin'" that even when his head is half off and he's trying to bite his friend, all I see is Mclovin, but hey I did like seeing him in the film anyway.

The storyline this time around to the 80’s original was more serious and darker tuned, as the original was taking the piss out of serotype vampire films like “Christopher lee films” lol given the audience at the time something different as Chris Sarandon playing the bad vampire with the cool edge… but don’t get me wrong the original is still brilliant today with an great cast, some black-comedy moments as the classic Roddy McDowall playing Peter Vincent, which I’m hoping for a special edition soon lol back to the remake it’s more realistic with it’s got different take on vampires, one thing I did like about this version is the speed of it…. It doesn’t waste time, some key moment happen like straight way with “Evil” getting turned into a vampire within the first 25 mins. The opening is a startling 3D shot through dark thunderclouds that ends in an impeccably-executed family massacre with Ramin Djawadi's soundtrack in background (Mr. Brooks) the use of the 3D was done very well with some beautiful sunsets scene and managed to use it, without over-using it if you get me lol

Overall this remake stays true to the 80’s original by giving us the audience a different type of vampire film with some brilliant actors, an great storyline and I’m very happy that the ending is not Hollywood style which is great.
